Centre for Liberty Urges AP Chief Minister to Lift Ban on Historic Play 'Chintamani'

Released: November 14, 2024
Citing constitutional free speech rights, the Centre for Liberty urges Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu to immediately revoke the "regressive" 2022 ban on the historic play Chintamani.

To,
Sri Chandrababu Naidu
Hon. Chief Minister
Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh

14 November 2024

Dear Sir:

In December of 2021, Ongole YCP leader Subbarao Gupta was physically assaulted by his own party people. This inhumane and brutal incident led to widespread criticism from the Arya Vysya community. To mitigate the discontent among Arya Vysyas, the then YCP government banned the hundred-year-old epic play Chintamani through G.O. Rt. No. 7, dated 17/01/2022.

Chintamani, written in 1923 by Sri Kaallakoori Narayanarao, became an instant classic with hundreds of performances throughout the Telugu-speaking regions of the Madras Presidency. In 1956, it was adapted into a successful film starring renowned actors Bhanumati and NTR. The play and film brought about significant social awareness and reforms.

The banning of Chintamani, a work with a century-long legacy of inspiring social progress, reflects a disturbing trend toward regressive thinking. At this rate, even celebrated works like Kanyasulkam may face similar restrictions in the future. This ban tarnishes the reputation of Telugus worldwide, who are known for their progressive outlook. While we recognize that certain elements of the play may be offensive to Arya Vysyas, the ban contravenes the freedom of expression guaranteed by Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution: “All citizens shall have the right to freedom of speech and expression.”

Freedom of speech exists precisely to protect expressions that may be controversial or uncomfortable for some. Speech that is universally agreeable requires no special protections. If we do not wish to see our nation resemble autocratic, theocratic states like Pakistan, Afghanistan, or Iran, we must uphold liberal, inclusive values over rigid dogmatism.

In light of India’s long-standing tradition of liberalism, we urge the government to refrain from intervening in literature and cultural expression. Considering the historic importance of Chintamani and the fundamental right to freedom of expression, we respectfully request that the government immediately lift the ban on the play.

Regards,

Nalamotu Chakravarthy
